Šumava bird sanctuary

 

Declared by Government Decree No. 681 on 8.12.2004. The main species - the subject matter of the protection of this bird sanctuary are capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse, black stork, corncrake, Eurasian Pygmy-owl, sparrow owl, black woodpecker and three-toed woodpecker. The Act on Nature and Landscape Protection defines a bird sanctuary as a special category of territorial protection, intended to maintain the population levels of the listed birds and the condition of their environment. In addition to the stated key species, Šumava recorded an occurrence of another twenty species of birds of European importance, including honey buzzard, falcon, owl, kingfisher and others.
