The present day condition of the Šumava forests

The result of the postglacial development of the forest vegetation is the formation of the characteristic Zonal vegetation units, which are subject to climate. Šumava is dominated by just three of these: The degree of flowering beech woods, the degree of acidophilic mountain beech woods and the degree of climate spruce woods. In addition to the three basic Zonal vegetation units, a number of azonal communities have been created in Šumava whose development is primarily conditioned by edaphic factors. These mainly include peat bogs, floodplains and waterlogged spruce woods on the water-influenced habitats, the relict pine forests, forest-free stone seas and detritus mixed forests contingent to skeletal soil and the communities of the lake cirques.
