SILVA GABRETA | Preface It is my great pleasure to introduce already the tenth volume of Silva Gabreta. Nine years ago, the trilateral conference "Geo-bio-diversity of the Bohemian/Bavarian Forest", which held in Prachatice, greatly stimulated interdisciplinary and transboundary co-operation in the region. Many conference attendees encouraged then the organisers and the authority of the Šumava National Park to establish some regional periodical for emerging scientific studies from the Bohemian Forest. So, through publishing the conference proceedings began the history of Silva Gabreta. The name came from the Roman toponym of the entire landscape of the southwestern mountain range of the Moldanubicum (Central Europe) including the Bohemian Forest (Šumava in Czech, Böhmerwald in German, see JENÍK 2002). The proceedings (Silva Gabreta, vol. 1) were issued in 1996 thanks to enthusiasm of the first editorial board and, in particular, Prof. Jan Jeník, the first editor in chief. Owing to increasing number of submissions and persistent understanding of the National Park Authority, Silva Gabreta soon turned from a biannual periodical to one regular volume published annually since 1999. In addition, some extra volumes and supplements have been published as workshops- proceedings and monographs, respectively. Albeit the hitherto volumes of Silva Gabreta have been dominated by papers of Czech authors, covering mainly the Czech side of the Bohemian Forest, some German and Austrian scholars have recently published their results in the journal. Though the journal is trilingual and publishes papers in English, Czech or German, increasing number of the Czech papers has been published entirely in English. Consequently, the papers written in English or German have fairly exceeded a half of contents of the last several volumes. This fact indeed has allowed for more critical peer reviewing of submitted manuscripts by foreign referees. As the editorial board has been extended "abroad", its foreign members also have helped substantially with call for papers, their smooth submission and peer reviewing. Recent rejection rate of the journal exceeds 30%. We too believe that both authors and readers may have realised and highly appreciated an increasing standard of the journal in the recent past. Although regionally focused, Silva Gabreta may be considered as an emerging international journal with an increasing impact at present, which publishes peer-reviewed research papers, reviews and short communications dealing with different aspects of natural history and nature protection especially within the territory of the Bohemian Forest. Subscription and worldwide distribution of Silva Gabreta persisted for solving. Considering vast research potential recently oriented on the Bohemian Forest and thus increasing number of contributions to Silva Gabreta, the editorial office and publishers decided to change the editorial policy. At the occasion of this small editorial jubilee, we are pleased to announce that, beginning from the next volume, three issues per year will be published regularly by the end of February, June and October. A regular subscription policy of the journal will be open in parallel (see cover for details). To optimise distribution of reprints, Silva Gabreta will further provide electronic reprints in a PDF format instead of printed ones. All submitted manuscripts will be peer reviewed by two independent anonymous referees in a due time, and if accepted, paper will be published at the earliest possibility. Hence, authors are encouraged in submitting their manuscripts all over the year. For a smooth submission, all contributors should consult and fulfil the new instructions to authors. English is the major publication language; however, contributions in German or Czech with an English abstract are published as well. I believe that the new editorial policy will enlarge the impact of Silva Gabreta and both authors and readers will appreciate all the changes.
